Marching orders

Sean Ambrose, Helensburgh NSW

Date:  17 April 2008

As a nation, we should be demanding the best for our youth and ensure that they are given opportunity to excel.

Commendations to minister of Defence, Robert Mclelland for taking initiative of gaining work experience for our nation's youth. This is a step in the right direction.

There has been much talk lately in regard to drug abuse by our youth. Indeed, it is easy to ridicule them, label them as having come from dysfunctional families or blame former governments. This is not the answer.

What is needed is compulsory cadet service, perhaps one day per week, whether that be Army, Navy or Air force. Such policy would provide young Australians with responsibility and purpose in life and provide the opportunity to learn leadership skills that they would certainly use later in life.

If the military brass are not willing to comply, give them their marching orders!
