Fine huon table for sale

Date:  10 April 2008

George Harris writes:

I am a self-employed furniture maker who designed and assembled the Huon Pine low table (pictured on this page). It is available for purchase.

The table was created for the 'tidal zone' exhibition, an exhibition of contemporary furniture and objects co-presented by the Design Centre - Tasmania and the furniture designers association. The exhibition was staged as part of the Ten Days on the Island arts festival in 2007.

In considering an island theme for the exhibition, the organisers settled on the tidal zone, '... the 'edge' that delineates the island's geographical space, a shifting space of change and new creation where discarded, found and natural materials, are collected and combined after the tide has washed away the previous landscape.'

The table measures 2.0 metres by 1.2 metres by 450 mm high. The top is made from three sequential wane-edge Huon Pine boards selected at Bradshaw's mill, and are about 32 mm thick. The glass is 8 mm strengthened window glass which has been cut to shape by a computer-controlled water jet cutter (2400 psi with a stream of garnet in it), and which was fused and slumped in a kiln to soften the sharp edges, and to assume the brushed pattern of the sand on the floor of the kiln. The legs are Huon Pine limb wood, and these have been partially turned to give an effect that resembles the phases of the moon, the fundamental driver of the tides. A collectors edition of the full exhibition catalogue is included.
