Date: 10 July 2007
Winter Tales are presented by the ACT Group of the Australian Women's Archives Project. Our second speaker for 2007 is Mary Clare Swete Kelly, PhD student in archaeology at ANU.
Mary Clare is an archaeologist in the final stages of her PhD. Her doctorate examines the genesis of early pottery from the northern Philippines and Taiwan. Her talk will cover the history of the salvage of the Weston Storage facility of the Department of Archaeology and Natural History at the ANU which was destroyed by the Canberra bushfires in January in 2003. Mary Clare managed the recovery and sorting of remains at these facilities. Due to the severity of the fire, archaeological techniques were employed in the salvage. The talk will discuss the original collections, their destruction and salvage and will draw conclusions for improved management, disaster preparedness and response.
The Australian Women’s Archives Project aims to preserve and provide access to archival records about Australian women. The Project was established by the National Foundation for Australian Women in 2000. For more information, go to http://www.womenaustralia.info .
